Ahead of State of the Union, Guns Down America calls for the end of exemptions for the gun industry

Washington, D.C. — Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union address, Guns Down America Executive Director Hudson Munoz released the following statement regarding what the gun violence prevention group would like to hear from the President tonight:

“As President Biden prepares to address the American people this evening, we hope that he will use this opportunity to firmly declare that the era of exceptionalism for the gun industry is over. Gun dealers have long believed that they are untouchable and wholly protected under the Second Amendment. That should never have been the case—and never again will it be.

The President’s executive actions last year helped rein in firearm manufacturers and hold the gun industry accountable for taking advantage of federal laws and marketing their deadly weapons to minors. The gun industry will not stop searching for loopholes and seeking exceptions while they hide behind the Second Amendment, necessitating sustained corporate accountability at the highest levels of government. The Biden administration has continued to confront our nation’s gun violence epidemic head on: From establishing the White House’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention to investing millions into community violence prevention to increasing background checks for firearm purchases—all of which have led to a remarkable decrease in deadly crimes. These actions that we called for ahead of last year’s SOTU address are actions that have undoubtedly saved lives and worked to create safer communities with less gun violence.”
