Guns Down America issues response to Supreme Court Arguments on ‘Ghost Guns’
Washington — Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments on the Biden administration’s restrictions on the largely untraceable firearms known as ‘ghost guns.’ In response to the Supreme Court appearing likely to uphold the regulation, Guns Down America Executive Director Hudson Munoz released the following statement:
“Ghost guns have been used in a growing number of crimes over the last decade. While the gun industry wants you to believe guns keep us safe, the reality is they actually serve to threaten public life in a society where firearms outnumber citizens. Gun violence remains a fixture of American culture that we must dismantle. The gun industry consistently seeks second amendment exceptionalism, but today the Supreme Court seems equally as skeptical as the rest of us as to why our nation should roll back a common-sense restriction that has the potential to lower crime rates and save lives. Restricting ghost guns was an important step by the Biden Administration in building a future with fewer guns and we support upholding this important regulation.”
Background:
According to The Washington Post, “In 2017, police submitted about 1,800 ghost guns for tracing. That number skyrocketed to more than 19,000 in 2021, according to the Justice Department. The 2021 figures included weapons linked to nearly 700 homicides or attempted homicides. Without serial numbers and purchase records, law enforcement officials said, less than one percent of those ghost guns could be traced. The lack of background checks for ghost guns allowed people barred from owning weapons, such as felons, to purchase them with ease.”
