Guns Down America on Supreme Court Ruling: We Must Push for Safer Communities Using All the Tools We Have
June 23, 2022
Washington, D.C. -- Guns Down America Executive Director Igor Volsky released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen."
"Conservatives have spent years packing the court with judges who place the financial interests of gun manufacturers ahead of the lives of the American people. With this opinion, the conservative justices on the Supreme Court have knowingly chosen to increase gun violence in the United States, putting us all at a higher risk of gun injury or death. This opinion will result in more guns in public spaces and more Americans will die."
“Creating safer communities with fewer guns requires an ‘all of the above’ approach where our movement uses all the tools, from engaging corporate America to grassroots organizing and advocacy. Moving forward, we must continue to fight for a safer future by not only engaging lawmakers and changing laws but also by pushing corporate America to fight for fewer guns.
“In the meantime, since an overwhelming majority of Americans support gun violence prevention laws that have proven to save lives, our movement has a responsibility to advance measures that will expand the court and rein in the radical opinions that literally put our lives at risk.”
In response to the Buffalo supermarket shooting, Guns Down America launched a campaign calling on supermarket chains to join the fight against gun violence. Prior to that, led a successful campaign to stop Walmart from selling guns after the El Paso shooting at a Walmart store and before that, took on the NRA's "murder insurance" program.
