New York Attorney General Letitia James Cast Spotlight on NRA Corruption, Forever Weakens the Organization’s Political Influence
Washington, D.C. — In response to today’s news of a jury finding the NRA and former President Wayne LaPierre liable for corruption, Guns Down America’s Executive Director Hudson Munoz released the following statement:
“Wayne LaPierre didn’t stand a chance of redemption in court, and we’re not surprised the jury found him liable for corruption. Wayne LaPierre’s profligate spending and extremist ideology ultimately weakened the NRA by every measure— their lobbying influence has been waning since 2015, their membership dues are down by $14 million, and they’ve lost more than a million members. The NRA is no longer the powerhouse it once was—and the only change was the spotlight on the shadiness of the institution brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The gun lobby does not command political influence anywhere near what it used to, and that’s because of this trial. The restitution order barely covers LaPierre’s graft, much less the 30-year toll of his extremism on the American people—the true victims.”
