Prop KK Passes Colorado Ballot Enacting Firearm and Ammunition Excise Tax

November 6, 2024

Prop KK, the nation's only gun violence prevention ballot measure this cycle, will create a new tax on firearm industry

**DENVER—**Today, Guns Down America celebrates the passage of Prop KK in Colorado, a firearm and ammunition excise tax to go towards community support services that have lost over 70% of funding in the last five years. Prop KK was the only gun violence-related ballot measure nationwide this year. Guns Down America Executive Director Hudson Munoz released the following statement:

“The passage of Prop KK is a victory for the people of Colorado, putting the cost of gun violence back on the gun industry. The deadly weapons they market and profit from created the gun violence epidemic which costs the lives of hundreds of Coloradans every year and Colorado taxpayers $156.1 million annually. This tax on firearms will create revenue to fund crime victim support services, mental health services for veterans and youth, and school safety programs. Voter approval of Prop KK is a bellwether moment demonstrating popular opinion has changed: people want to see the gun industry pay for the harms its products create. Colorado joins California as the second state to enact a firearms and ammunition excise tax, and we will work to ensure more states follow in their footsteps. Prop KK is a blueprint for the nation.”
