WASHINGTON -- More than 150 Florida advocates rallied today to call on Walmart to stop selling guns at a Walmart store less than a mile from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, site of a mass shooting last year that left 17 people dead.
“Walmart has an obligation to keep its employees safe and help us build safer communities,” said **Igor Volsky, Executive Director and Founder of Guns Down America. “**Walmart has taken some important steps forward over the last few years. Now is the time for Walmart send a strong and unmistakable signal to the gun industry and lawmakers that Americans are demanding real change.”

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Walmart -- one of the largest gun retailers in the nation -- is “rethinking” its role. The nation’s largest retailer has already stopped selling handguns and assault weapons and raised the age to purchase guns or ammunition to 21. Multiple Presidential candidates have also joined the call for Walmart to stop selling guns.
Advocates called on Walmart to:
- Stop selling weapons until we raise the standard of gun ownership and production in America.
- Stop making political contributions to lawmakers who take money from the NRA. Currently, the top 10 recipients of NRA cash also receive donations from Walmart.
The coalition leading the rally included Guns Down America, the American Federation of Teachers, Broward Teachers Union, Color of Change, March for Our Lives, MoveOn.org, Orange Ribbons for Change, Ruth’s List Broward and Women’s March Florida. State Senators Annette Taddeo and Gary Farmer also joined.
